Performance measurement is a critical part of managing successful organizations. Strong performance measurement systems are increasingly required by investors, contributors, grantors and regulatory bodies to evaluate organizational effectiveness.
IPM places an emphasis on creating measurement systems with both an internal and external focus. External metrics are the "report card" on how effectively customer and stakeholder needs are being met and ultimately the progress towards strategic goals. Internal metrics are used as leading indicators to keep core processes on track. Internal metrics allow for data based, pro-active decision making, and the identification of recurring problems which need to be addressed.
Performance measurement is not only about the numbers. An effective performance management system is the foundation for building a productive, appropriately rewarded and fulfilled team of employees.
"What gets measured gets done, what gets measured and fed back gets done well, what gets rewarded gets repeated."
- John E. Jones
"Measurement is the first step that leads to control and eventually to improvement. If you can't measure something, you can't understand it. If you can't understand it, you can't control it. If you can't control it, you can't improve it."
